Rikolto Indonesia (previously VECO Indonesia) is as a member of Rikolto International (previously Vredeseilanden), an international NGO based in Leuven, Belgium. For more than 30 years, we have worked continuously to achieve one goal: a better deal for farmers.
Rikolto Indonesia enables and supports smallholder farmers to take up their role in rural poverty alleviation and to contribute to feeding a growing world population in an sustainable way.
Goals of the Programme
- Sustainable sourcing of Coffee, Cocoa, Rice and Cinnamon from private sector enables the inclusion of smallholder farmers in Java, Sulawesi, Flores and Sumatra in agriculture value chains
- Sustainable rice production of good standard quality that is benefiting smallholders and consumers
There are several practical reasons for the change of name Rikolto as follows:
In Belgium, the name Vedeseilandenveco has been widely known by the public, about 75% of Belgian people know the logo. But still many people in Belgium think that our scope of work is the field of humanity and peace ('Vredeseilanden' can be translated 'Peace Island')
Our name also has a contingent connotation focusing on charity activities that can be a barrier to network development.
At the international level, there is confusion between the use of Vredeseilanden and VECO. In Belgium we are known as Vredeseilanden while in seven regional offices in other countries we are known as VECO which stands for 'VredesEilanden Country Office'
VECO as a name does not contain deep meaning
Rikolto means 'harvest' in Esperanto language. It is because we want farmers to have abundant crops, but also because we want to 'harvest' new ideas and solutions to improve the performance of our food system.
No. Currently our status is still an International NGO. However, we hope that in the future we aim to register Rikolto Indonesia into a local foundation in Indonesia.
- Cooperation with the Directorate General of Village Administration (Ditjen Bina Pemdes) - formerly DG PMD - under the coordination with the Ministry of Home Affairs since 1998.
- The MoU for 3 years (2014-2016), has been extended on January 16, 2017 for the next 3 (2017-2020) period.
In Indonesia, Rikolto's tagline is "How is our Food Future?". This tagline presents the issues of sustainability and inclusion in food systems championed by Rikolto.
Our logo is Rikolto's name with light green colour. We replaced our logo yet leaving the unique characteristic of the green Vitruvian Man image in the middle of the Rikolto logo, in whcih the image is inspired by the paintings of Italian artist Leonardo da Vinci.
